St. Louis Globe-Democrat, November 10, 2010

ST. LOUIS – Yesterday in the Khorassan Ballroom of the Chase Park Plaza, Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis allocated $614,625 across 81 partner agencies to fund programs for more than 19,000 local children who have physical or mental disabilities.

The annual Allocations Luncheon, part of a two-part educational and celebratory Champions for Children Summit, was the 44th in the history of Variety, which also honored Ameren Corporation as an outstanding sponsor with the organization’s President’s Award, along with former Cardinals catcher Mike Matheny as the 2010 “Champion for Kids” for his work to help local children. As part of the luncheon, two-time Grammy Award winner Patti LaBelle was revealed as the headliner for Variety’s 2011 Dinner with the Stars gala, happening May 7, 2011.

Variety also distributed the 2010 Stellar Performance Awards to seven local agencies that have exhibited an extraordinary commitment to Variety’s programs: Department of Special Education, Archdiocese of St. Louis; Crider Health Center; H.I.S. K.I.D.S., Inc.; Hyde Park Outreach; Nurses for Newborns Foundation; Ranken Jordan – A Pediatric Specialty Hospital; and South Side Day Nursery.

In addition, Variety honored Bill Burnes, Hogan Transport and Dr. Susan Pittman with its 2010 Hearts and Hands Awards, recognizing the long-standing dedication of exemplary unpaid volunteers.

The $614,625 in Variety allocations includes three Sunshine Coach Vans to Community Living, Inc; One Hope United; and St. Louis Society. With the addition of these three fans, 104 Sunshine Coach Vans will be on the streets of St. Louis, transporting children across the area to doctor appointments, therapy sessions and special outings or activities.

Prior to the Allocations Luncheon, Variety hosted a complimentary Executive Educational Forum featuring keynote speaker Dan Kowitz, senior vice president of IEG Advisory Services Group, who presented “How to Structure Strategic Nonprofit Partnerships,” a tutorial on how to revamp an organization’s approach on buying, managing and measuring sponsorships. Jim Weddle, managing partner for Edward Jones Investments, also spoke on “Corporate Citizenship: Why It Makes Sense.”
