Sponsorship spending on the National Football League has taken a breather following a robust 2014-2015 season.

Sponsorship revenue for the NFL and its 32 teams rose 4.4 percent to $1.2 billion in the 2015-2016 season, according to IEG research. Revenue grew 7.8 percent in the previous year.

The increase exceeds the 4.1 percent increase in overall sponsorship spending in 2015 but lags the 4.5 percent increase in the sports category.

“Corporate interest in the NFL remains strong. Few properties can offer mass reach, a connection with die-hard fans and in-demand content like the NFL,” said William Chipps, IEG Sponsorship Report senior editor.

The NFL signed one new sponsor in the 2015 season: Hyundai Motor Co. The South Korea-based automaker replaced General Motors Co., which had sponsored the pro sports league since 2001.

The Dannon Co. also joined the ranks of NFL corporate partners after announcing a promotional partnership with the league in 2014.
